Workplace safety programs must be in writing to exist!

Workplace safety programs are one sure inspection item on any safety or insurance inspection. I can't tell you how often I have gone into a company and asked to see their company safety program, only to be told that it is a verbal program.

If it isn't in writing, it probably doesn't exist in every worker's mind in the same way.

It is hard to prove you have a workplace safety program to an insurance or OSHA inspector when it isn't written down.

If it doesn't exist it may cost your company money, either in direct fines, or in higher costs for insurance.

The other extreme of the example is a three inch thick binder with dust on it, located in the file room. It has programs that have been copied from multiple sources, and aren't applicable to the company.

If the inspector is not happy with your written program, it is an even bet that he will find more to be unhappy about on the walk through.

There are at least six sections to a simple but effective company safety program. There may be significantly more depending upon the nature and scope of the work your company does. Each section may be a single page or multiple pages, depending upon the number of locations and type of work your company performs.
